In the forested and rolling hills west of Florence, where the Medici hunted boar and the soil is suited to Sangiovese, lies one of the first appellations in the world – Carmignano. Fattoria di Bacchereto (Terre a Mano being the historic name of the estate) is situated atop a hill in a small town called Bacchereto, with vineyard holdings that have been in the family for more than a century. Practicing organic and biodynamic viticulture, Rossella Benici Tesi produces powerful and elegantly classic wines from the traditional varieties of the region using spontaneous fermentations, concrete tanks and neutral 350 liter tonneau. Carmignano is a prized and small region, with only a handful of producers, of which Rossella is one of the smallest and most highly regarded.
