James Jelks started Florez wines in Santa Cruz after time spent studying at UC Davis and working at vineyards around the world. This informs his old world sensibility while making wines with a particular West Coast panache.
Free Solo, called an Old Vine Heritage Blend, is made from Zinfandel, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, Petite Sirah, and Black Muscat, all picked together and co-fermented using carbonic maceration, followed by 10 months on the lees in old French oak. Medium-bodied with plush dark fruits and touch of tobacco and crushed herbs with a little zip.
